“Sugar and Spice” playfully critiques our expectations for young girls. This stop motion animation is inspired by the 19th century rhyme “What Are Little Boys Made Of?”. Countless contemporary videos of this outdated rhyme continue to reinforce that little girls are made of “sugar and spice and everything nice.” This animated short points out that excessive sweetness can be damaging, as the figure in the animation is overwhelmed by piles of candy. “Sugar and Spice” was created in collaboration with Eric Rosenbaum for the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center’s Art on the Marquee program, and later adapted for Boston’s Area Code Art Fair.
