Animated GIFs projected on soft pastel, paper, and MDF
2017
This installation explores the tension between the unsightly private and the polished public actions of performing femininity, and the ways in which our phones facilitate constant bodily self-policing.
A series of animated GIFs are projected onto pastel drawings on mock iPhone 8s. The drawings highlight specific visual elements of the GIFs: the teeth, the lips, the facial expression. From left to right, the individual GIFs are titled Checking My Teeth, Applying Lipstick, and Finding My Light. The title of the installation as a whole, Fish Gape / Duck Face, references popular facial expressions for selfies in 2017.
