Are You Buying?

Multimedia performance
30 minutes

A storefront mannequin searches for beauty, traveling back in time through fashion and beauty advertisements from the 1920s to today. At first, she’s thrilled to reinvent herself. But soon she’s caught in a loop of desire and dissatisfaction, chasing an ever-shifting beauty ideal. This solo performance was designed specifically for storefront windows.

Choreography, projection design, custom software, and costumes by Catherine Siller. Sound by Alec Spegielman.

“Are You Buying?” has been presented in vacant storefronts in Downtown Boston and Harvard Square, as well as adapted for Boston Center for the Arts’ black box theater. These performances were supported in part by the Boston Foundation’s Next Steps for Boston Dance grant, the Downtown Crossing Business Improvement District (BID), and LuminArtz. An early version of the project was presented at Boston CyberArts Gallery with research and development supported by a Boston Foundation Live Arts Boston (LAB) grant.
